Design Planning -Week 5

 Design Planning

After secondary research and primary research, I have two design plans at this stage both of which address the same problem but in different directions. It is a special device that provides find things easily without taking time to find out.

Design Plan 1

My first design plan is to create a device with records multiple voice messages and playback them when users are unable to find their item. A crafted paper circle with a hole that the user can spin inside of which are a series of important items for them.  The section here also works as pre-record.

Addressing Problem

For items that they place at random and are aware of which they later forget about, the device offers a solution by enabling them to pre-record their audio indicating the item's location or pre-record the labeling item that appears on this device by spinning the crafted circle. Later, when they forget where the thing is, they can playback the audio to remember where the item they had placed.

Design Plan 2

My second design plan is to create a device with a camera sensor. Using the knowledge of reacTIViSion which provide the barcode, the barcode in different number were allowed to make specific image and soundtracking.

Addressing Problem

Items that they unintentionally dropped off and are unable to locate or events like their friends or family messing up their spot for particular items. This is a camera tracking device with Braille on the provided barcode sticker. Different barcode show different item names in Braille. Users need to stick the sticker to the related items first. When they experience the situation of the item getting dropped off, they can use camera tracking to track the item and it will produce a sound for notifying the user item's position.

Case Study

O! RADIO

This is a homemade paper radio. By using paper packages, users can easily change their appearance designs. Users can select from a variety of graphic packages to express their uniqueness. Make your feelings known.

This homemade radio has a physical appearance that is very similar to what I'm going for, a paper circle with a hole that the user can spin inside.

YOTO MINI

Yoto Mini is a screen-free storytelling device for kids. Yoto Mini has a pixelated LED display that is appealing visually. Children are encouraged to listen to the audio and use their imaginations in addition to having fun with the visual appeal.

Its card system allows access to various content, including podcasts, family-friendly radio, and audiobooks. With DIY kits, children can even create their own stories.

This project inspired me the use string which is beneficial for visually impaired people hanging around their necks.

MEMO BOX

Memo box is a device for elderly people to record their memory. Elderly people should first point the camera of the product at an object to capture memories. After the item has been identified, the user should describe it, and the product will record their words. The item's story will automatically start playing the other day when the elderly person points the camera at the item that has been recorded. There’s an app for family members to listen to the recordings which learn more stories about the elderly through the Memo box. This project is very touching and also gives me the idea of letting visually impaired people and family members know more about them.

MEMOGRAM

MEMOGRAM, which consists of a web app and a Bluetooth device, prints our photos in the form of a written description and schedules a time for us to (re)discover these moments in photos a few months later. This device has required a phone to attach for taking pictures. The device will compress in the form of tickets. The project inspired me the use Bluetooth and also the ticket concept.

For the two design plans, Ms. Louise suggests I do user flow for a better understanding of its functionality and ask for technical people to know about the implementation of both ideas. She welcomed me to remain in both design approaches.
