Comfirmed Topic - Week 2 & Week 3

Project Proposal 4 


Throughout the research, I decided to go for the topic of the blind community. I choose the sixth category for the assignments which is Optimizing: making daily activities more efficient.

In Malaysia,  there are tens of thousands of people across the nation who are engaged in a quiet struggle to complete tasks that others might pass by without giving them a second thought. They encounter significant challenges in performing simple tasks like reading, writing, and even getting cash from an ATM, but few people are aware of these challenges. Life's challenges for those who are blind start at a young age.

Brickfield, Malaysia, also known as Little India, has a large amount of particular community - Visual Impaired People. The city has gathered around 3000 of them.

Problem Statement

Unlike normally sighted people, Finding the items left elsewhere presents a challenge for blind people. They, therefore, require assistance in order to find their belongings quickly and effectively when needed.

Initial Idea Proposal

A collection of designed containers for the blind community· The containers can handle physical things. Besides, features like recording sound and playback audio are added.

A container with a drawer, record, and playback button.

When opening the drawers. There have 3 pieces that then can attach to the top of the container. 

The first piece = Pieces with hooks so Hanging items and display their belongings.

Second piece = Pieces with texture so Items with cylindrical or round， smooth surfaces do not slip easily.


Third piece = Pieces with clips to hold things, not easy to fly off.





Modeling 

To showcase the idea in more detail, I create a model sample to explain my concept. 







Arduino Researches 

I also search for Arduino to try to know its functionality.  


The tutorial videos offer detailed instructions for making an ISD 1820 voice recorder and playback device using an Arduino. In order to make it well presented, the coding portion is also well explained. In general, the video is easy for beginners to follow as it demonstrates how to create a simple voice recorder and playback.


Feedback

After explaining my fourth thought to my lecturer, Ms. Looise. She encourages me to go on with this topic. After that, I create user testing questions for the next step. 


Learning Thoughts

I am happy that I finally confirmed my direction in this assignment because before that, I struggled to research ideas that can help people and make their life better. 
I also have a few thoughts on the topic of the blind community such as labels stickers that produce sounds that were attached to their belongings. However, I found out it was impossible to create it so I do more research and modify the idea into a more solid idea.

Visit Blind Agencies and show them my product - Week 17

  Week 17 Beta Test This week, I visited them and there are 5 blind workers participating in my user test. The reason for doing this is to know if am I doing the things that are needed for them and comments for continued improvement. This is the survey form and below are the user responses. Insights 100% of them believe the product assists blind workers in taking notes. 100% of them like the concept of the product. 100%of them know how to use the product. 100% of them can recognize the braille on the device and define them clearly. 100% of them think the device should be smaller and is able to with them everywhere they go. 100% of them claim that the volume is soft, and needs to increase the volume a bit higher. 40% of them think I should add in meeting note button because the blind worker will record the long session for the meeting. 60% of them think I should add in sound notification to indicate to users they can start recording. 40% of them think that I should add voice-over w...

Find Interviewer and Get their responses - Week 4

Contact company service for the Blind Community After the project proposal was approved, I immediately create a survey form for the blind community. The survey form was created in English and Bahasa Melayu, in case I met someone who is more fluent in Malay.   To find the blind community, I try to email Malaysia Association for the Blind (MAB) for asking their permission to interview the blind community.  However, the company hasn't reply my message. So, I try to contact the service number provided on Facebook. Fortunately, the company picked up my phone. They said they had received my email and need take time for them to reply to my message. They promise me they will arrange an online meeting for me with the blind community.
